/IMG_2525.JPG "One of a Kind" by Timothy Berg & Rebekah Myers, located at CityLine/Bush DART Station

CityLine, the 186-acre mixed-use project in Richardson, Texas, has solidified its commitment to the arts by welcoming sculptures by Gordon Huether, Cliff Garten, Timothy Berg and Rebekah Myers collaborative, Joseph Havel and Angela Mia De La Vega.

“During the planning stages of CityLine, KDC’s vision for a live-work-play environment included the installation of sculptures that would provide a vibrant backdrop for this new urban landscape,” said Walt Mountford, executive vice president, KDC. “The resulting art program compliments public spaces and forms a connecting thread throughout the development. We are proud to welcome five unique pieces, by both local and national artists, each of which is unique in character and provides visitors with inspiration, entertainment and joy.”

Aesthetic visionary Gordon Huether was commissioned through Sharon Corgan Leeber of Architectural Arts Company to create artwork that reflects CityLine’s goal of capturing the best of both worlds, the rural and urban landscapes, in one active-lifestyle environment. His resulting installation, Over the Moon, was inspired by the famous ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ nursery rhyme and the iconic Texas longhorn, which connects to the area’s history and traditions. The sculpture’s falciform shape resembles the letter ‘C’, as in CityLine, another connection to the Richardson metropolitan neighborhood.

Huether’s sculpture is approximately 25 feet tall, with the longhorn approximately 7 ½ feet tall, sitting on top of the moon. The internal frame is constructed of aluminum tubing and clad in plexiglass and carved EPS foam. The final finish of the sculpture is a resin coating. The piece sits atop an aluminum base and is illuminated from the exterior as well as from within using LEDs. The sculpture is currently being installed in CityLine Plaza.

“When I was commissioned to create art for CityLine, I wanted to emphasize the local identity and history of the area in a unique way,” said Huether. “By incorporating playful elements like the steer and moon, I believe the piece encompasses the true feel of CityLine: whimsical, an element of surprise and cutting-edge technology.”

American artist Cliff Garten has created Retexo, a bronze sculpture located in a fountain at Four CityLine Plaza. Garten is known for his evocative, site-specific sculptures that integrate within urban space. Over the past twenty years, he has completed more than fifty-five artworks in public spaces throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“Every place has the possibility of creating an atmosphere that welcomes us,” said Garten. “Sculpture defines our interaction and movement by creating energy between things, generating interest in public activity, reframing our private lives and creating a sense of place within public and private realms. Public and private experiences are never distinct, but exchange places throughout the day. Art in public places provides moments for private reflection and shared community.”

To continue KDC’s commitment of adding artwork to the property, CityLine has also installed sculptures by the Timothy Berg and Rebekah Myers collaborative, Dallas-based artist Angela Mia De La Vega, and Joseph Havel’s Endless from The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

The Timothy Berg and Rebekah Myers collaborative has created a bright green, ceramic rabbit that evokes the varied character of CityLine, acknowledging both the historic native prairie from which it sprang, and the sleek urban environment it has since created. The aerodynamic rabbit form, titled One of a Kind, is in the DART Plaza of CityLine, acknowledging the project’s role as a transportation hub. The Claremont, Calif.-based artists collaborative is known for casting everyday objects in unexpected ways that provoke questions of materiality, surplus and rarity, and the consequences the of 21st century consumer’s desires.

Houston-based sculptor Joseph Havel’s Endless, previously displayed at The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, is now on display near the future Aloft Hotel site, expected to open in 2017. The sculpture is part of a series of work that examines books as vessels, and how they carry culture as both art and history. The 101-inch high sculpture gradually transitions from bronze to translucent resin to give it the appearance of an endless column of books, made from casts of 1980s catalogues from an art auction house.

Dallas sculptor Angela Mia De La Vega has created one of her signature figurative bronze sculptures, Whirlwind, depicting two children playing near Lot A apartments. Located in the pocket park on the east side of N. Plano Road, this life-size sculpture recognizes the joy and spirit of childhood. Known for her ability to exude the human spirit through expressive faces and natural body movement, De La Vega’s greatest inspiration is the curious and ever-changing individuality of her children.

Expansion made possible by matching grant from KDC CEO, Steve Van Amburgh

Ribbon Cutting celebration on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m.

Dallas — Youth Believing in Change (YBC) extends its reach into the Dallas community with a 2,500-square-foot facility expansion made possible by a matching grant from Steve Van Amburgh, CEO of KDC Real Estate & Investments.  YBC will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 10 – 11 a.m.

“The community YBC serves represents families from various ethnic groups whose income levels are at or below the national poverty level,” said Reverend Vince Gaddis, YBC Executive Director. “We are so pleased to add this needed space to our facility so that we can welcome more children into our programs from our waiting list. The new addition allows YBC to serve 215 children every day after school, up from 125.”

With the contribution from Van Amburgh, who has been an YBC advisor for several years, YBC was able to reach the $250,000 financial threshold needed to begin construction on the major building initiative. This included added classroom space, which will help the ministry better serve the Vickery Meadow neighborhood.

“We recently celebrated our twentieth year serving the Vickery Meadow area, as well as the entirety of Dallas,” said Gaddis. “It’s been our mission from the beginning to bring the Good News of Jesus to these families, while helping set up their children to be successful in life. We are so pleased to continue delivering that message in the coming decades. A special thanks to everyone that has been a part of YBC.”

YBC was formed in 1995 to give children the spiritual and educational foundation they need to succeed. The ministry hosts after school programs for children ages K-12 from Sept. through May, which includes hot meals, tutoring, mentoring and homework help. In addition, YBC offers an eight-week summer program during June and July that mirrors regular school hours. It includes a music program, art enrichment, leadership and other educational efforts.

Reverend Vince Gaddis, Steve Van Amburgh, members of the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Joe Pryor, assistant superintendent with Austin Commercial and project coordinator, and other development team members will be in attendance at the Sept. 10 grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony.  The festivities will be held on the YBC campus, 8574 Stults Road, in Dallas.

The following contractors and suppliers contributed to the expansion: Austin Commercial, Potter Concrete, Martin Marietta Materials, Teddy Peinado, Goodall, Piper-Weatherford, Drywall Interiors, Weir Brothers, JMEG, Intertech Floors, Harmon, Brandt, Nova Landscaping, DGB, Shahan & Son Painting, H3, Chatham Worth, Chamberlin Waterproofing and Roofing, Maverick Framing, JLB Partners, Moore Disposal, Green Electronic Solutions and Strip-A-Zone.

Watters Creek at Montgomery Farms is dedicated to making a difference in the local community. As part of its “Change for Charity,” the shopping center will partner with Minnie’s Food Pantry and CASA for the third and fourth quarter of 2015, respectively. The charity partners receive a percentage of the funds collected from the parking meters at Watters Creek. There are dozens of free, metered spaces available at Watters Creek. Feeding the meters is encouraged because those quarters add up and can make a big difference in the community if everyone contributes.

“We announced a call for charities earlier this year and the response we received was overwhelming. We are thrilled to be able to partner with Minnie’s Food Pantry in Q3 and CASA in Q4 of this year. Both make a huge and positive impact in our local community,” said Debra Martinez, marketing director for Watters Creek at Montgomery Farms. “Our Change for Charity program is just one way Watters Creek is giving back. We have many exciting events and programs this year in conjunction with local organizations. I want to encourage everyone to come out, learn more about the groups, and donate or volunteer.”

Minnie’s Food Pantry, Watters Creek’s Change for Charity partner for the third quarter (July, August, September) of 2015, is  a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that provides food assistance to children and families in need in the community. As the largest food pantry in Plano, Minnie’s Food Pantry provides healthy food to nearly 4,000 people per month and is 100 percent donor-funded. All of its support comes from individuals, corporations, churches and organizations. All questions regarding Minnie’s Food Pantry or how donations will be used, should be directed to (972) 596-0253 or visit www.minniesfoodpantry.org

CASA of Collin County will be Watters Creek’s Change for Charity partner for the fourth quarter (October, November, December) of 2015. CASA of Collin County promotes and protects the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected by training volunteer advocates to improve the child’s quality of life and serves as their voice within the court system to ensure they are placed in a safe, permanent and loving home. For more information about CASA of Collin County, contact them at (972) 529-2272 or visit www.casaofcollincounty.org.
