The latest installment of “Stories”, Lumedia Musicworks’ comedic documentary series, explores the lives and works of underrepresented first women composers. The episode premieres online May 26, 2023.

The daughter of professional musicians and a student at the famous Ospedale della Pieta` in Venice, this young Italian female composer and multi-instrumentalist was well-positioned to perform and publish throughout Europe. As a central member of the family’s pioneering mobile opera company, Anna traveled to the music centers and high courts of Europe. Partnered with her singer/stage mom and jack-of-all-trades manager/father, she secured the success of the family business by charming audiences and securing patronage from the aristocracy.

Austin-based Baroque flutist Nuria Canales portrays Anna Bon, and performs works by the composer with the Dallas-based ensemble. Narrator Phillip Thompson returns to the series as Robert Thack of Unsolved Mysteries. The mystery component stems from Anna Bon’s unknown whereabouts from the year 1767 on. The segment explores the various theories behind her mysterious disappearance, including an alien abduction.

Researched and written by Lumedia Musicworks’ directors Julianna Emanski and Molly Hammond, the script is by Douglas Bankston and historical images provided by R. Jenai Talkington. Emanski directed and edited the film.

Vivaldi's Seasons copy Facebook Personal Cover cop

DALLAS - Crafted from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, this high-octane concerto immersion highlights the virtuosity of seven members of the ensemble. The Mandolin Concerto features guitarist Hector Torres. Cellists Christopher Philpott and Sydney ZumMallen join forces in the Concerto for Two Cellos. The Concerto for Four Violins and Cello rounds out the nearly all-Vivaldi program.

“It’s exciting to have the talent within the ensemble to create this singular experience”, said Assistant Director and harpsichordist Molly Hammond. “Specific movements from The Four Seasons provide the framework for the addition of other audience-friendly pieces. There’s even a jazz standard with a striking connection to one of the Seasons.”

Works by peer composers Alessandro Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli reveal their influence and charm.

The latest installment of the comedic documentary series, “Stories” explores underrepresented works of the first women composers.

DALLAS - When not singing the praises of God, Teodora Ginés, a former slave turned church musician, would sneak out to provide music at parties to the extent the Church authorities allowed… or knew about.

With a musician shortage in the New World, she was able to make her mark on Caribbean music as it is known today. However, there is little evidence surrounding the details of her life and work. This documentary, modeled after the 1990’s television show Unsolved Mysteries, explores the various possibilities that might explain this unlikely success story.

Dallas, Texas soprano Erica Vernice Simmons portrays Teodora Ginés and performs her iconic work “Son de la Má Teodora”. She is joined by Lewisville, Texas actress, Raven Thurman, who plays her sister Micaela. Simmons commented, “Teodora’s piece sounds like a vacation at the beach. Who would imagine that music from 1562 could be so much fun?”

Phillip Thompson, new to Lumedia’s Stories, narrates the documentary in the style of Unsolved Mysteries’ Robert Thack. Joining the Lumedia Stories team are art historian R. Jenai Talkington, screenwriter Douglas Bankston, and musicologist Billy Traylor. Artistic Director Julianna Emanski directed and edited the film.

Hymns of Angels

Conveying the wonder of the season, as sung by angels and told by shepherds, Lumedia Musicworks presents a live concert inspired by traditional French carols on Friday, December 2 in Arlington, and Saturday, December 3 in Dallas, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30.

 * Early Bird Tickets 30% off from November 14 - 20.  Use promo code EARLYBIRD at checkout.*

DALLAS - Lumedia Musicworks ushers in the Christmas spirit with French holiday tunes from the baroque era. The ensemble will perform Hymns of Angels live on two consecutive nights in both Arlington and Dallas. Typical to Lumedia’s style of programming, tightly-knit sets of repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries carry the audience through a moving and celebratory hour-long musical experience.

Various French composers wrote their own versions of these traditional songs, including both vocal and instrumental versions. Soprano Jenifer Thyssen of Austin joins Artistic Director and soprano Julianna Emanski in both these pastoral carols and select liturgical pieces. Viktoria Nihznik, who recently relocated to Fort Worth from Finland, contributes the magical shimmering sounds of the kantele, a rarely-heard Finnish plucked string instrument. The ensemble performs on instruments that are historical reproductions from the 16th-18th centuries.

“Although we are in our sixth season, we are particularly thrilled to be presenting our first Christmas concert,” said Emanski. “We created a beautiful digital version of Hymns of Angels during the pandemic two years ago. It’s time to perform a full-length live concert version in the appropriate acoustical and spiritual setting.”

Lumedia Musicworks - Have Harpsichord, Will Tr.jpg Still shot from the short film

Lumedia Musicworks performs live in its sixth season with a short film launch party on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25.

DALLAS - Lumedia Musicworks presents both sides of its mission in this multi-media event as it brings early music to life through captivating live performance and short film. The ensemble will perform live, and premiere their new short film titled Have Harpsichord, Will Travel…in F Major: A road trippin’, coffee sippin’, gas suckin’, string pluckin’ concert expedition.

“The source of inspiration for the short film came directly from Francois Couperin’s Tic-Toc-Choc ou les Maillotins, a perpetual motion piece for solo harpsichord,” said Molly Hammond, harpsichordist and Assistant Director. “Suffice it to say that travel is involved, something working harpsichords and their players do on a regular basis.”

The ensemble performs on instruments made to look and sound like those used during the 16th-18th centuries.

Julianna Emanski, Artistic Director, elaborates, “We used the subject of the film as a basis for a short concert at the event. The harpsichord is featured as a solo instrument, but will also be accompanied by violin, traverso (Baroque flute) and viola da gamba. Expect lively works by Pachelbel, Daquin and Rameau. We also welcome back Liquid Courage as the generous wine sponsor for the event.”

The latest installment of “Stories” explores underrepresented works of the first women composers in this comedic docuseries. Belle van Zuylen made her mark through writing, but found true happiness through music. This season’s“Stories” are  generously underwritten by The Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation.

Nicknamed “The Goddess of the Netherlands,” Belle van Zuylen achieved notoriety as an outspoken critic of the ruling classes. Having survived the French Revolution and a rebuff by Mozart, she reinvented herself as a composer of chamber music. Starring in the comic scenes from Belle’s life are Dallas’s own Bob and Patsy Brooks, Abigail Pierce and Thane Isaac of Denton. Elaine Scholly, host of Stories, narrates this tale enhanced by newly recorded tracks of van Zuylen’s works, portraits from the 18th-century, and animation from the 21st. Jendi Tarde Killberg researched, wrote, and directed the episode.

Lumedia Musicworks closes its fifth season with a live concert subtitled, “From the Land of King Arthur to the Tennessee Mountains”, Saturday, May 28 at 7:30 pm in Dallas. Tickets are $30.

DALLAS - Lumedia Musicworks, an early classical ensemble, will juxtapose Celtic fiddling tunes with Baroque masterpieces of a similar flavor in its upcoming concert A New Celtic Journey. Celtic folk songs will feature vocalists who share an affinity for this music.

“The sources of inspiration for this collection vary widely, from the usual fair maidens and lonely isles to Cupid, sparrows and fishers of seaweed. It’s definitely going to be eclectic,” said Artistic Director Julianna Emanski.

The ensemble performs on instruments made to look and sound like those used when Irish fiddling was born. The song lyrics include English and Gaelic. Rumor has it that one traditional Celtic tune on the program, “Carolan’s Dream”, was the inspiration for Led Zeppelin's “Stairway to Heaven”. French Baroque tambourins, Irish reels and an Appalachian folk song contribute to the Journey

“While researching this program we came across “Mr. Dubourg’s Maggot” and figured a title like that would turn heads. Fortunately, it’s a catchy tune and we can’t wait to share,” said Jendi Tarde, a vocalist with the ensemble.

Short Film Release Party: School Car Line - A Survival Guide

Lumedia Musicworks partners with Veritas Wine Room in Dallas to launch its latest short film, School Car Line - A Survival Guide, on Sunday, April 24 at 5pm. Tickets start at $30, includes first glass of wine, and supports the nonprofits work.

DALLAS - Surviving the school car line requires a battle plan, and Lumedia Musicworks captures the experience in signature style with its latest short film School Car Line - A Survival Guide. The short film launches at Veritas Wine Room, an award-winning vino-pub featuring a wide selection of wines, charcuterie and cheese boards, and handcrafted chocolate. The ensemble will perform prior to the film in a short concert connecting to the film’s story. Members of the cast and crew will also be on hand to meet the audience.

The story is one every parent or grandparent can relate to: the endless line of cars, the long wait, the cell phone ban. Jendi Tarde of Castle Hills stars as the main character, a new mom to the experience. She survives the learning curve with the help of a handbook and careful supervision by a stern crossing guard, portrayed by Jeff Burleson of Dallas.  Recorded by the Lumedia Musicworks ensemble, the soundtrack juxtaposes 18th century French music written for the viola da gamba, and includes footage of Dallas’s own Christopher Philpott performing on an historical instrument.

“Relatively few viewers will be familiar with this enchanting music,” explains Lumedia Musicworks artistic director Dr. Julianna Emanski. “But most, if not all, will relate to the subject matter which has many humorous moments.”

The short film release party reveals another creative side to the nonprofit.  “We had a lot of fun imagining the live performance portion of this event,” said Lumedia Musicworks lutenist Hector Torres. “It’s got a script of its own that connects us to the audience and provides continuity to the film.”

The short was filmed at Great Hearts Upper School in Irving, Texas. “This was Lumedia’s first time working with school kids,” said Lumedia Musicworks short film director Derrick Robert Brown of Dallas. “We filmed over spring break and they had a blast! It was a great opportunity for them. They loved experiencing the filming process.”

The Short Film Release Party takes place on Sunday, April 24, at 5:00 pm at the Veritas Wine Room in Dallas. General admission tickets are $30 and available for purchase online at https://www.lumediamusicworks.com/shortfilms

Ticket purchases support the Lumedia Musicworks 501(c)3 non profit performing arts organization, and assist in their mission to present early classical music in creative ways. DALLAS - Birthdays are often celebrated at local breweries, and this year J.S. Bach’s birthday is no exception. Lumedia Musicworks celebrates in signature style, performing party hits of 1720 live on historical instruments. Pegasus City Brewery gets in on the fun with its special beer release “19 Block Bock”. Beverage purchases benefit the nonprofit.

“This concert is an unusual curation of Bach’s brighter side,” said Molly Hammond, harpsichordist. “We handpicked light-hearted arias, sonatas, and duets from unexpected larger works. A few may be familiar, but all should bring a smile.”

The ensemble performs on instruments that were made to look and sound like the ones performed during Bach’s time. The program selections vary from one solo performer to twenty, due to a cameo appearance by Inspirata Ensemble.

“Two of our singers, Jendi Tarde and Derrick Brown, will be stepping out from behind their usual directorial roles at Lumedia,” said Julianna Emanski, Artistic Director and Grammy-nominated vocalist. “We also welcome some new instrumentalists to the roster: Nuria Canales from Austin and Leonardo Lima from Houston.”
