DAY to PLAY Co-Chair Jennifer Hull, Co-Chair Jen Fahrenbruch, Honorary Co-Chair Stephen Hipp, Co-Chair Mandy Main

Blue skies, bright sun, and big smiles blanketed the lawn of AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Annette Strauss Artist Square on Saturday, April 27, 2019, for Family Gateway’s 2nd Annual DAY to PLAY family fundraiser, supporting the agency’s work to provide stability and life-changing services to children and families affected by homelessness. More than 600 people attended the event, and 150 pairs of new kids’ tennis shoes were collected on site for Family Gateway’s Kicks for Kids Campaign – an effort led by the host committee and their children and supported by the community to provide shoes to children at Family Gateway.

Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of activities and discoveries – from lawn games and yoga to live music and crafts. The day’s entertainment was also paired with a focus on volunteerism and community service, including a basic overview of the scope of families who are experiencing or are near homelessness in Dallas.

Honorary Chair Stephen Hipp and Event Co-Chairs Jen Fahrenbruch, Jennifer Hull, and Mandy Main took the stage in the afternoon to welcome families and honor the Miltenberger Family with Family Gateway’s inaugural Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award for their tireless service to families affected by homelessness. The late Annette Strauss, former Dallas mayor, was the founder of Family Gateway. The Miltenberger Family first became involved with Family Gateway in 2009, when they prepared a shelter room at the Annette G. Strauss Family Gateway Center for a new family’s arrival. Since then they have helped with the holiday program, sent kids to camp, chaired events and served on the board. The entire family continues to work tirelessly to support Family Gateway, from serving meals and organizing donation drives to connecting their networks to the nonprofit’s mission.

Music by DJ Kaivan “KB” Bazleh from OontzKids, a performance by HeARTS of Maya founder/singer/dancer Maya Delgado, and a group yoga demo by Hanuman Homies’ founder Stefanie Tovar drew kids to the main stage throughout the day. Activities included bounce houses; inflatable slides; an obstacle course and climbing wall; a life-size Hungry Hungry Hippos game; dunking booth; bungee run; gaming truck; Giant Chess, Jenga, and Connect Four; hamster ball races; kids’ disco; LEGO building; robo-surfing; dual hoop basketball; putting green courtesy of The First Tee of Greater Dallas; selfies with superheroes and characters from Capes for Kindness; a photo booth, and more.

Children were excited to meet Dallas Stars mascot Victor E. Green, who entertained the kids and took his turn on the giant inflatable slide. They also enjoyed adding their own artwork and inspirational messages to a wall mural focusing on “how you help your neighbor” and “what community means to you.”

Interactive booths by nonprofit partners and exhibitors offering education, outreach and volunteer opportunities for children included Capes for Kindness, Dallas Stars Foundation, Dallas Zoo, DART, DFW Child, DISD, Explore Horizons, The First Tee of Greater Dallas, Hanuman Homies, HeARTS of Maya, Kids Helping Kids TX, National Charity League, Nasher Sculpture Center, Oontz Kids Academy, Pediatric Associates of Dallas, Raising Cane’s, and Wee Volunteer.

“DAY to PLAY was created not only to help families affected by homelessness, but also to bring families together for a fun day while presenting ideas for community service,” said Ellen Magnis, president and CEO, Family Gateway. “We are thrilled by the number of families who came out to Annette Strauss Square to take part in this special day, to learn how to give back to the community, and to spend time together. We’re looking forward to next year’s event and appreciate our sponsors and supporters for their help in making DAY to PLAY 2019 a success.”

Proceeds from DAY to PLAY will support Family Gateway’s mission to provide stability and life-changing supportive services to children and families affected by homelessness in Dallas. Also, during the event, Family Gateway will present its inaugural Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award to the Miltenberger family for their tireless service to families affected by homelessness. “We are also excited to announce that Family Gateway is also launching a Kicks for Kids Campaign and will be collecting donations of new tennis shoes at this event for children at Family Gateway!” added Hull.  “So please don’t forget to pick up a pair before you head to the event on April 27.”

The interventions Family Gateway provides give children the chance to build resiliency and competence to break the detrimental cycle of homelessness. At Family Gateway, single parents with children, families with older male children, multi-generational families, families with same gender parents – all are welcome. Family Gateway keeps families together and works with them as they are.

“Family Gateway does an amazing job serving families in so many ways,” added Hull. “Our family has enjoyed many volunteer opportunities together as a family there.  We have served dinner, assisted with the Holiday Shopping event, and we even threw a big dance party for the kids at the shelter, hosted by my son who is a DJ.”

Exhibitor space is $500 and includes a tent, table, signage and the opportunity to market to attendees while offering a child-friendly activity for event goers. Sponsorship opportunities start at $500. For more information, visit www.familygateway.org/events/dtp or email aoconnell@familygateway.org.

“The fast pace of family life today makes it easy to forget that just spending time together with our kids is so important,” said Jennifer Hull. “DAY to PLAY not only benefits the incredible work of Family Gateway but also gives parents an extraordinary interactive opportunity to introduce or reinforce the importance of helping others. I hope to see you on April 27!  Come play and spend a wonderful day with your family.”

The Miltenberger Family with Laura Bush Bo Miltenberger, Bryce Miltenberger, Paula Miltenberger, Laura Bush, Brady Miltenberger, and Bay Miltenberger at Family Gateway’s “Gateway to Opportunity” fundraising luncheon.

The Miltenberger family of Preston Hollow will receive Family Gateway’s inaugural Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award for their tireless service to families affected by homelessness. The late Annette Strauss, former Dallas mayor, was the founder of Family Gateway. The nonprofit will present the award to the family at its 2nd Annual DAY to PLAY fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Annette Strauss Artist Square. The event, which takes place from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., brings families together for a day filled with activities and discoveries geared to children and benefits families affected by homelessness.

“We are honored that Family Gateway has created the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award in recognition of our mother’s long history and involvement with this organization that she founded,” said Nancy Strauss Halbreich.

Paula and Bay Miltenberger and their children first became involved with the nonprofit in 2009, when they prepared a shelter room at the Annette G. Strauss Family Gateway Center for a new family’s arrival. In 2011, they organized the “adoption” of 75 families during the holidays and have been deeply involved in the holiday program ever since, organizing donation drives and volunteering in the Holiday Store. In conjunction with a generous group of friends, they ensure dozens of kids get to attend summer camp at Kids Across America Kamp in Missouri. Paula co-chaired the Gateway to Opportunity Luncheon in 2016 and 2017 and now serves on the board of directors. Bay, a former member of the board of directors, now sits on Family Gateway’s Affordable Housing Board. The entire family continues to work tirelessly, from serving meals and organizing donation drives to connecting their networks to the nonprofit’s mission.

DAY to PLAY, which features everything from lawn games and yoga to live music and crafts, pairs entertainment with a focus on volunteerism and community service.  The event also gives attendees a basic overview of the scope of families who are experiencing or are near homelessness in Dallas.

“It will be exciting to see the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award presented to a family each year at DAY to PLAY, recognizing the many young community leaders who are truly making an impact,” added Janie Strauss McGarr.

Event co-chairs are Jen Fahrenbruch, Jennifer Hull, and Mandy Main, and honorary chair is Stephen Hipp.

“This is an event that celebrates families – all different types, backgrounds, sizes, compositions, colors, and privileges,” said Jen Fahrenbruch, DAY to PLAY co-chair and Preston Hollow resident. “Families make communities, and this community has a lot to celebrate.  DAY to PLAY not only benefits the incredible work of Family Gateway, but also gives parents an extraordinary interactive opportunity to introduce or reinforce the importance of helping others. We can all show up for each other at DAY to PLAY to show that families count.”

Mom of three invites families to come play together, learn about giving back in our community, and benefit those affected by homelessness

Mandy Main, a University Park mother of three boys, ages 10, 8, and 2.5, is co-chairing Family Gateway’s 2nd Annual DAY to PLAY on April 27, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Annette Strauss Artist Square.

“This event is such a fun family-oriented event, and my family was very excited to attend last year.  My husband Clayton and I were sponsors, and we all truly enjoyed the experience,” said Mandy Main.

“DAY to PLAY is unique in the way it gets the entire family involved,” added Main.  “It provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to be kids by simply playing while parents and children both learn how to give back to our community. Teaching kids to get involved at a very young age is so important to instill these monumental values and help mold our future leaders. Last year, our boys had such a fun afternoon, and we all learned more about Family Gateway’s mission and other nonprofits in our city.”

“Family Gateway is an amazing organization and inspires me daily to help others – even the smallest acts of kindness can go a long way,” added Main. “One of my favorite memories is volunteering at Family Gateway’s Holiday Store with my husband and boys. It was wonderful knowing the few hours that we gave helped families shop for their children, making their Christmas morning extra special.  I loved seeing my boys get involved by simply helping others. I think back on that day and still feel the true meaning of Christmas.”

Main and her family have lived in University Park for 20 years. She attended SMU, where she was a marketing major and received a Bachelor of Business Administration. She worked for Ben E. Keith Company for 14 years but considers her favorite job title is mom.

“Being a mom challenges and rewards me daily,” added Main. “Clayton and I really value the importance of experiences with our family so that we can hopefully all look back on them years later, remembering those special family memories. Time truly passes by way too quickly, and we are blessed to have a healthy, loving family.”

Passionate about helping children and families in our community, Main has also chaired Wish Night 2012 for Make-A-Wish. Additionally, she volunteers for Vacation Bible School at their church, St. Michael’s & All Angels, and at her boys’ school serving on the cafeteria line and assisting with school fundraisers.

“If you are a parent who wishes you had more time to have fun together as a family and you would like to learn more about how you all can help others and get involved in the community, DAY to PLAY is a great starting point,” added Main.  “I hope to see you on April 27!  Come play and spend a wonderful day with your family.”
