The Dallas Foundation, the first community foundation in Texas, has granted Dallas-based Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL) $750K to support CPAL’s mission of reducing childhood poverty in Dallas by 50 percent within a single generation.

The Dallas Foundation’s grant to CPAL is the organization’s largest grant issued to date, and is strategically aligned with the Foundation’s work to ensure a Strong and Healthy Start for children, beginning with birth to age three.  The grant will enable CPAL to launch a dedicated “Birth to 3 Care Team,” as well as fund their continued work to educate North Texans about the issue of poverty in the metroplex, as 1 in 3 children grow up in poverty in Dallas.

By supporting children during their birth-to-three years, when researchers estimate 1 million new neuroconnections are made every second, CPAL notes there is a special window of opportunity to help children overcome the many structural barriers faced by low-income families and positively influence lifelong outcomes.

“CPAL’s work to fight child poverty and change the trajectory of our city, starting with our youngest residents, directly aligns with The Dallas Foundation’s strategic priorities and builds on our proven track record of investing in transformational solutions for children in Dallas,” said Matthew Randazzo, President & CEO of The Dallas Foundation. “The Dallas Foundation is proud to partner with CPAL on their mission, and we are excited to see the organization continue to take actionable steps towards reducing child poverty throughout Dallas.”

Across Dallas, over 100,000 children are forced to grow up in poverty each year. To combat this, and to ensure a comprehensive and scalable approach in tackling this issue, CPAL unites a variety of Dallas’ top resources and officials across a range of issue areas that contribute to the cycle of poverty including: housing, safety, transportation, childcare, food, health, jobs, and education. They also provide actionable steps these agencies can take across the city to partner on this mission.

"CPAL is extremely thankful to The Dallas Foundation for this generous grant, and for partnering with us to lift up ‘Birth to Three Care’ as a critical strategy for breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty," said Alan Cohen, President & CEO of CPAL. "We know that one of the most effective ways to mitigate inequities and change the long-term odds for children that are born furthest from opportunity is to improve support for families during those children's first three years."

“On behalf of The Dallas Foundation Board of Governors, we are thrilled to support CPAL,” said Catherine Rose, Chair of The Dallas Foundation’s Community Impact Committee. “We are confident that the work CPAL is doing throughout our city - and the work they will continue to do - is furthering our mission of making a difference in the future of Dallas.”

For more information about The Dallas Foundation, please visit www.dallasfoundation.org. For more information about CPAL, please visit www.childpovertyactionlab.org.

ABOUT CHILD POVERTY ACTION LAB

Since its 2018 inception, the Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL) has embraced a strategic approach to tackle systemic issues underlying intergenerational cycles of poverty, with a North Star goal of reducing Dallas’ child poverty rate by 50% within a single generation.  Using an approach that prioritizes evidence, scale, and community expertise, CPAL and its partners work relentlessly to create upward mobility for Dallas’ children living in poverty, over 3 in 4 of whom are children of color. Nexus Recovery Center, a nonprofit offering specialized substance use disorder treatment services for adult women in Dallas, is the leader and expert in recovery efforts in North Texas. This year, the nonprofit celebrates 50 years of helping women pursue their recovery journey with its Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign, chaired by Jan Madigan, Nexus Board Member, and Carolyn Waghorne, longtime supporter of the organization. The milestone anniversary comes at a time when recovery efforts and treatment services are especially critical due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign will focus on raising funds for three different essential pillars of Nexus Recovery Center’s services: community, dignity and security. Funds designated for “community” will focus on Nexus Recovery Center’s campus environment, the nonprofit staff and frontline workers and the recovery community. Funds designated for “dignity” will be dedicated to the basic needs of Nexus Recovery Center’s clients, such as clothing and essential items. Lastly, funds donated towards “security” will go towards the safety of the Nexus Recovery Center campus and staff. The campaign aims to raise at least 50 gifts of $50K each.

“Nexus Recovery Center has been doing life-changing work for the women of North Texas for the past half a century, and we are proud to honor that work with the Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign this year,” said Heather Ormand, CEO of Nexus Recovery Center. “As someone who has been in recovery for nearly a decade, I personally understand the importance of organizations such as Nexus Recovery Center and the impact they can have in changing the trajectory of a woman’s life. We look forward to a celebratory year, and hope the community will join us in supporting Nexus Recovery Center.”

Since its inception in 1971, Nexus Recovery Center has helped more than 50,000 women seeking sobriety and recovery. It is the only treatment center in North Texas that allows children to accompany their mothers seeking treatment, and the facility breaks down any financial barriers that may be preventing someone from seeking help. Since March 2020 and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic - a time that is increasingly difficult for women pursuing recovery - Nexus Recovery Center has seen the demand for its services drastically climb. The nonprofit has served over 1,500 women since March 2020. They continue to operate at full capacity in spite of the challenges caused by the pandemic.

“The Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign recognizes the organization’s monumental impact on thousands of women in our city for the past half century, while also planning for the future,” said Jan Madigan, Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign Co-Chair.” “It is my honor to co-chair this special campaign that will raise much needed funds for an organization doing so much good for Dallas.”

“I am extremely proud to co-chair the Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign,” said Carolyn Waghorne, Nexus 50 for 50 Anniversary Campaign Co-Chair. “Nexus Recovery Center and the work it does for women battling specialized substance use disorder treatment services across North Texas is not only inspiring, but essential to our community. Dallas is a better city because of Nexus Recovery Center, and I am honored to lead this campaign to ensure the next 50 years are even better than the last for the clients of Nexus Recovery Center.”

“We are beyond grateful to Jan and Carolyn for their willingness to chair this campaign and their long-term support of Nexus,” said Karen Rogers, Nexus Recovery Center Board Chair.

Allie + Bess, the Dallas-based, women-owned jewelry brand launched in August 2019 beloved for its bold colors, unique beads and covetable and iconic bracelet stacks, is proud to announce its first brand collaboration today with Austin-based brand and artist Katie Kime. The collaboration announcement comes on the heels of the brand’s explosive growth over the past year - despite the pandemic and unprecedented times for the retail industry, an initial $100 investment has grown into a business boasting a run rate of more than $1M.

“When the pandemic hit in the infancy of our business, we knew we had to swiftly adapt our business model to be cohesive to the new, uncharted landscape,” said Bess Callarman, Co-Founder of Allie + Bess. “So we transitioned to a direct-to-consumer model and worked with influencers to lift the visibility of the brand. We credit that initial success to thinking outside of the box and being nimble.”

The Katie Kime for Allie + Bess Collection features bracelet stacks combining Allie + Bess’ signature aesthetic and Katie Kime’s artistic eye for bright, vibrant color palette reflected on the beads used in each Allie + Bess piece. The new collection launches just in time for the Spring season - as well as Valentine’s (and Galentine’s) Day gifting. The Katie Kime for Allie + Bess Collection is now available for purchase on the Allie + Bess website

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with Katie Kime on our first collaboration,” said Allie Wardlaw, Co-Founder of Allie + Bess. “Katie is a visionary artist and female entrepreneur - the perfect fit for our first partnership - and we are so excited to bring her designs to life through Allie + Bess bracelets.”

Wardlaw and Callarman previously met while working together in the healthcare industry and became fast friends. As busy and stylish moms, the founders sought a bracelet that could take them from carpool drop-off to workout to happy hour, but didn’t find anything on the market to meet their needs. The pair fell in love with their now signature vinyl bead, and quickly taught themselves to be beaders, using a mix of beads from around the world. The brand’s flat, uniform, ethically-sourced signature beads are crafted by Ghanaian artisans. Also called record or vulcanized heishi beads, they have dynamic texture and are available in a wide array of colorations. Allie + Bess has also expanded to include bracelets made of decorative, hand-dyed and carved bone African beads. While the beads are globally sourced, the products are locally made - each Allie + Bess piece is individually designed and handmade in Dallas. Additionally, each of the brand’s bracelets features five black vinyl beads, representing the pair’s five children.

“I am delighted to partner with Allie + Bess on this collaboration,” said Katie Kime. “This partnership is a celebration of our two brands’ values of Texan female entrepreneurship, storytelling and artistry. We can’t wait for consumers to get their hands on these beautiful new bracelets!”

Alto, a Dallas-based rideshare and delivery company currently serving Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, has announced its expansion to Los Angeles. The first employee-based, on-demand rideshare and delivery company providing the safest, most consistent and highest quality experience is now offering pre-scheduled and on-demand rides in the city - including curbside pickup at LAX.

“At such a critical time, we’re thrilled to bring Alto’s elevated rideshare and delivery experience to the Los Angeles market,” said Will Coleman, co-founder and CEO at Alto. “Knowing how many people have benefited from our consistent, high-quality and safe offerings in our initial market in Texas, we know we have a lot to offer to the LA community.”

Alto sets the standard in cleanliness in the ridesharing industry with its luxury fleets undergoing daily service checks, deep cleaning procedures, and between-ride cleanings with EPA-registered disinfectants. In addition to the daily cleaning and maintenance procedures, each vehicle's high-touch surfaces such as the interior and exterior door handles and headrests are disinfected between every trip. To ensure maximum safety for its drivers and riders in the midst of COVID-19, Alto has double-downed on its safety efforts by equipping each vehicle with custom plexiglass barriers between the driver and passenger compartments while also installing HEPA cabin air filters that remove 99.9% of airborne particles.

Alto is currently available in Houston, Dallas, and now Los Angeles. Consumers in all markets can earn a free Alto ride by leaving other rideshare behind in 2020 - and sharing their reasons why with the brand on Twitter. Download the Alto app on the App Store or Google Play, or sign up at https://www.ridealto.com/.
