Veteran’s Day is an opportunity for Americans to honor and show thanks to our veterans for the service and sacrifices they have given to our great country. As the nation’s number one retailer, Walmart is showing its commitment to supporting our military men and women and their families by helping to understand and address some of the specific and unmet needs they face when they return home.
Nashun Evans, a Department Manager at the Walmart located on Northwest Highway and Skillman, served three tours in Iraq and is now in the Army Reserves. He started working at Walmart in 2011 and believes Walmart helped ease his transition from military to civilian life because of the opportunities Walmart provides him to use the skills he acquired while serving. He also pointed to its family-oriented atmosphere which makes it easier for him to support his seven-year-old daughter.
Walmart understands that one of the biggest needs of our returning warriors is employment. That’s why, on Memorial Day this year, Walmart launched its Welcome Home Commitment. It is an effort to provide jobs for recently separated veterans and offers those who have transitioned from active duty within the last 12 months to have priority access to job openings throughout the United States. Since the program began, Walmart has hired over 2,700 veterans in Texas alone, more than double that of any other state, and more than 21,000 nationally.
“I would recommend any veteran to apply for a job at Walmart if they are looking for a work environment that will utilize the skills they have gained in the military and are in search of opportunities for advancement,” said Nashun. “Many veterans come back from serving their country wondering where they fit in. Walmart can provide the answer.”
Through the Welcome Home Commitment, Walmart projects it will hire more than 100,000 veterans in the next five years. It is a testament to the value Walmart places on the sacrifice and skill set of our veterans.
