Giving Thanks This November for Good Health? The Wine Poste Partners with Sandler-Kenner Foundation

As we gather friends and family to give thanks for the blessings of good health and a successful year, the Wine Poste is giving everyone the opportunity to help support a Dallas-based non-profit, Sandler-Kenner Foundation, started by Preston Hollow residents Dr. Gregory A. and Susan Echt. With a percentage of online and onsite sales going back to the foundation as well as a special wine tasting, the Wine Poste is bringing awareness to a groundbreaking study to advance the early detection of pancreatic cancer, the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and a disease often called the “silent killer” because it leaves few survivors.

This November, during Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, there are three ways to help:

  • Purchase a bottle of wine from the Wine Poste, either onsite or online at www.wineposte.com, from Nov. 17-22, and 15 percent of sales from six well-curated wines will be donated to the Sandler-Kenner Foundation;
  • Attend a special tasting at the Wine Poste on Nov. 22 to showcase these featured wines; and
  • Consider a donation to the Sandler-Kenner Foundation this holiday season and help fund a specific study that could advance the early detection of pancreatic cancer.

The work of the Sandler-Kenner Foundation, a Dallas-based non-profit, in doing research into early detection for pancreatic cancer is a personal cause for the Wine Poste’s General Manager, James Jordan, who lost his first wife to pancreatic cancer. Dr. James Mackey, an oncologist with Choice Cancer Care, is also a majority owner of the Wine Poste, and supports research into early screening methods.

“This is a personal cause for anyone who has lost someone you love to this horrible disease,” notes Jordan. “The Wine Poste is pleased to support the work of the Sandler-Kenner Foundation.”

The week of Nov. 17-22 (just as you are doing your Thanksgiving shopping), 15 percent of sales from the following highly-rated wines will benefit the Sandler-Kenner Foundation:

  • J Brut Cuvee Sparkling, $24.99  (Regular Price $27.99)
  • Talbott Sleepy Hollow Chardonnay, $34.99  (Regular Price $39.99)
  • Talbott Sleepy Hollow Pinot Noir, $34.99  (Regular Price $39.99)
  • Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz, $39.99  (Regular Price $49.99)
  • Megahertz California Cabernet Sauvignon, $39.99  (Regular Price $49.99)
  • Achaval Ferrer Quimera Malbec Red Blend, $39.99  (Regular Price $59.99)

On Friday, Nov. 22 from 6 to 10 p.m., the Wine Poste will host a special tasting to raise money for pancreatic cancer research (more info at www.wineposte.com/index.php/upcoming-wine-tastings-and-dinners). Proceeds from the event benefit a specific, first-of-its-kind study that the Sandler-Kenner Foundation is dedicated to funding at the Mayo Clinic. The study has the potential to define a strategy for early detection of pancreatic cancer in patients with new-onset of diabetes over age 50, a high-risk patient population. The study, titled the Examination of the Pancreas in New Diabetes (EXPAND) Trial, utilizes 15 years of research of the relationship between diabetes and pancreatic cancer through data from the Rochester Epidemiological Project and research on thousands of patients seen at Mayo Clinic with pancreatic cancer.

“We are proud to support Mayo Clinic as they work toward a future when doctors can identify pancreatic cancer early enough to extend and save lives,” said Sandler-Kenner Foundation Founder, President and Board Chairman Gregory A. Echt, M.D., Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology.

Clinicians agree that it is of paramount importance to find and diagnose pancreatic cancer early to increase the patient’s ability to survive it — but currently, good screening methods to find this deadly killer are lacking. Pancreatic cancer is a disease often called the “silent killer” because it leaves few survivors. Pancreatic cancer survivability has not improved in 50 years: this year alone, 44,000 people will be diagnosed with it, and 39,000 people will die from this deadly disease.
