If you've ever been interested in African American history and culture, then the 9th annual Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair is an event this weekend that shouldn't be missed. Billed as "the Southwest African American Experience in Books and Story," the book fair is being held at the African American Museum at Fair Park over the entire weekend.
Tulisoma is a Swahili word which means "we read," an appropriate phrase as the main function of the event is to be a community-based literary festival promoting literacy and the arts in the South Dallas/Fair Park area.
Several majors players are heavily involved in the event, including Councilmember Carolyn Davis, the Dallas Public Library, the African American Museum and the South Dallas Cultural Center. Over the course of three days, there will be panel discussions with authors, creative writing and art workshops, book signings, music and storytelling.
A few of the keynote speakers that will be at the event include Rosalyn McMillan (Conservation & Roses) and Reverand Michael Williams Waters (Gospel Brunch). The event is free to the public but space is limited so RSVPs are recommended. Learn more at the Tulisoma website.
