The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a service of scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century.  

In this service, the congregation listens to scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News.  Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson's message. 

The combined choirs of St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church  and Central Christian Church  (Disciples of Christ) under the direction of Music Directors Lee Corbin of St. Thomas and David Aston of Central joined together Sunday afternoon in Central’s sanctuary for the service. 

The Advent Service of Lessons and Carols differs from place to place in format and content. The order of the service for December 17th followed a traditional form but used only six of the nine lessons: three from the Old Testament and three from the New Testament. The carols or anthems, selected with Advent themes, following each reading were closely linked with the readings. 

After the service, members and friends from both congregations gathered to share fellowship and refreshments. 

Sunday, December 24th at 8 p.m. St. Thomas will celebrate Christmas Eve Holy Eucharist with incense and Monday, December 25th at 10 a.m. Christmas Day Holy Eucharist with music. 

Central Christian Church will present a live drama of the Nativity and accounts that led to it during 11 a.m. morning worship.  Central has a long history of utilizing the arts to spread the Good News. A traditional Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held at 6 p.m., early enough to attend and still get the children in bed for Santa's visit.
