Knitted flowers sprout from the garden surrounding the Reading Room area at Klyde Warren Park.

Ronda Van Dyk, owner and yarn addiction enabler at the Shabby Sheep, worked side-by-side with the Dallas Yarn Bombers to festoon Klyde Warren Park ahead of its opening weekend festivities starting Saturday, Oct. 27.

The State-Thomas yarn store will celebrate the opening of the park in fuzzy fashion with a knitting circle starting at 2 p.m. Saturday. Experienced knitters and crocheters and those who want to learn are welcome to join. And if you're wondering where to find the knitters, just look for the trees with cozy sweaters and the lampposts with knitted vines trailing up. It's pretty hard to ignore, actually.

"I think that maybe people will be more aware of us," Van Dyke said. If you get hooked on crocheting or if knitting keeps you in stitches, you can come back from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays.  "We do an event on Thursday nights, so this is just the day version. It's isn't really a formal class."

On Thursday, though, a troup of furtive fiber artists, including noted North Texas yarn bomber K Witta herself, converged on the reading room area of Klyde Warren Park, tacking knitted lady bugs, bumblebees, tree frogs, snails, and two very cute owls on the trees next to the super-modern playground.

"Yarn bombing is relatively new to Dallas. It's so fun. There's definitely a giggle factor," Van Dyk said with an irrepressible smile. "When we install this thing on Thursday, I'm going to have to wear Depends or something."

From the way Van Dyk was laughing and carrying on with her fellow guerilla grafters, here's hoping she did.

Most of the opening weekend activities at Klyde Warren Park are free and open to the public. To see a complete event listing, visit the park's website.
