Dallas Independent School District will kick-off their Summer Food Service Program at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 20 at Crawford Memorial Park, 8740 Elam Road – a Dallas Park and Recreation SEND A KID TO CAMP site.

Dallas ISD and Dairy MAX bring fun and excitement to this year’s Summer Food Service Program. The USDA federally funded program provides free healthy meals to kids and teens 18 years and younger at summer sites.  This critical program addresses childhood hunger during the summer months when school is not in session.

Utilizing the NFL, Dairy MAX and the National Dairy Council’s program Fuel Up to Play 60, sites will receive fun prizes and incentives for students who stop by for a meal.  Fuel Up to Play 60 posters, yard signs and mobile feeding trucks help create awareness of the program within the Dallas ISD community. Dallas Cowboys’ alumni and 3 time Super Bowl champ, Jay Novacek, will serve as the star-power to encourage students to fuel up with healthy, free meals all summer.

Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services Executive Director Dora Rivas says, “We are excited to add fun elements to our Summer Food Program with Fuel Up to Play 60 and the Dallas Cowboys. This will greatly help to increase awareness of our summer meal locations, where all children are welcome to participate.”

With over 165,000 food insecure children in the Dallas metropolitan area, Dallas ISD is committed to ensure youth throughout Dallas receive proper nutrition during the summer months. Since 1996, Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services in conjunction with the Texas Department of Agriculture, has been providing free meals and snacks to Dallas children and youth through the SFSP. This year, meals will be provided at over 95 locations throughout Dallas, including Dallas ISD schools, colleges, youth activity centers and parks.

Special guests at the kick-off event include Bill Ludwig, Southwest Regional Administrator of USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services.  To find a local site and serving times, Dallas ISD residents can text 877-877 or go to www.summerfood.org.
