If you find yourself in a city where everyone greets you as “sir” or “ma’am” then chances are you’re in Dallas.  Just like every other place in the Lone Start State, when you greet someone on the street, the obligatory comment is “Howdy” not “Hello.” If you’re planning on being a new resident in this sprawling city, these are things you’ll need to know if you want to fit in.  Unlike other cities across the country Dallasites are serious about their lingo, but it’s those little quirky undertones of life that make the city so friendly and welcoming.  As pointed out in Movoto,

“You won’t be able to resist that sweet Texan drawl and soon enough you’ll be “ya’ll”-ing with the rest of us. It’s true what you’ve heard – Texans are a friendly bunch, and they love their cowboy hats and boots.”

While no one will tell you that you must go out and buy your own cowboy hat and boots, after you’ve been there a while, you’ll probably decide that for yourself.  Still, life in Dallas can be very interesting for the newcomer.  Here are a few things you should bear in mind before you move.

The Billionaire Magnet

If you want to rub elbows with the most elite of society, you’ll find that Dallas is just as good as New York, without the crazy taxis all over the place.  It is home to 18 Fortune 500 companies and 18 of the wealthiest people in the country.  The city is literally rolling in dough. Of all the cities in the country, Dallas is second only to New York when it comes to the wealthy choosing it as their home.  If you choose to live there, maybe some of that will rub off on you.

The Diversity

Of course, everything is not all billionaires and rich people. Dallas has a great deal of diversity as well.  45,000 of its residents are Jewish, making it the largest Jewish community in Texas.  25% of its residents are African-American, and 42% are Mexican-American with a large population of Hispanic and Latinos included.  Each of these groups contributes in some way to the personality of the city and gives it its own unique vibe.  According to the National Journal,

“The percentage of diverse suburban communities in the Dallas metropolitan region remains largely unchanged at 36% in both 2000 and 2010. In 2010, diverse and nonwhite suburbs took over much of the adjacent neighborhoods just outside Dallas proper.”

This diversity has touched just about everything in the city from the variety of foods you have to the kind of clothes you’ll find when you go shopping.

Corporations Thrive in Dallas

Aside from the Fortune 500 companies that have made Dallas their home base, there are other large corporations that have found the city to be a haven of prosperity.  You’ll find many corporate headquarters located right in the heart of the city including 7-11, JC Penney, GameStop, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Chili’s, and Rolex making it one of the most favored cities for corporations of all kinds to find a place where they can literally get down to business.

The Nature

Of course, there are plenty of outdoor things you can do in Dallas that can include nearly every activity you can think of.  Their famous White Rock Lake is considered to be one of the most used places in the city.  As the Dallas Park & Recreation Center tells us,

“White Rock is one of the most heavily used parks in the Dallas Park system and is the location of many special events and runs.  White Rock Lake offers a variety of active and passive activity options and is one of the best places to experience natural areas and wildlife in an urban setting.”
