On Nov. 15 at 8 p.m., Dallas Chamber Symphony will perform an evening of powerful and uplifting music at the Dallas City Performance Hall, located at 2520 Flora St.

“This evening is one of contrasts – the orchestral pieces vary significantly in tone and presentation, and we are featuring both ends of the sound spectrum in our solo features for flute and double bass,” Richard McKay, Dallas Chamber Symphony’s founder, conductor and artistic director, stated in a press release. 

Edward Elgar’s “Serenade for Strings,” a series of three, short, poignant movements, will open the program. It will be followed by Howard Hanson’s “Serenade for Flute, Harp and Strings,” featuring Margaret Fischer on flute; and Paul Hindemith’s “Trauermusik,” featuring Jack Unzicker on double bass. Arnold Schoenberg’s “Transfigured Night,” will be the grand finale. Known as the father of the 12-tone writing technique, Schoenberg modeled “Transfigured Night” after Richard Dehmel’s poem by the same name. The poem’s overarching themes of love, hope, acceptance and forgiveness also can be found in Schoenberg’s composition.

“The romantic music of Elgar and Schoenberg is quite relevant, as it provides much-needed inspiration, beauty and healing to our community,” stated McKay.

He added, “It is inspiring to work with musicians like Ms. Fischer and Mr. Unzicker and to give them a chance to share their talents more directly with our audiences.”

Fischer is an accomplished flutist and piccoloist with a number of professional accolades. She maintains private studios in Plano and Frisco and is the principal flutist of Dallas Chamber Symphony. Fischer also is a member of Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and has performed with Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Winds and more. She holds a bachelor's in flute performance from the University of Southern California, a master's from the University of North Texas and a doctorate from Michigan State University.  

Unzicker is the principal double bassist of Dallas Chamber Symphony and Plano Symphony Orchestra. He also performs with Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Opera, and he has served as the principal double bassist of the AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Dallas Winds, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Classical Ballet. In addition, Unzicker is an assistant professor of double bass at The University of Texas at Arlington and has taught at a number of other educational institutions and music camps. Unzicker received his bachelor’s in music from Western Washington University and his master’s and doctorate from the University of North Texas.
