Mark Wellen FAIA is co-founder and principal of Rhotenberry Wellen Architects in Midland, Texas. Wellen began his career in Frank Welch’s studio, and is an especially appropriate choice to present this season’s Frank Welch Memorial Lecture. Drawing inspiration from the vast, inimitable landscape and the traditions of Texas’ modernist regionalist architects of previous generations, he has become a champion of the highest standards of the built environment, through both design and leadership. His work is both intuitive and instinctive, drawing on the unrelenting characteristics of the region – its big sky, long horizon, intense light and climatic extremes to reveal moments of richness that elevate the human experience. Wellen’s body of work includes varied building types and project sizes from ranch shelters to residences, museums and downtown office towers. His work has received numerous national, regional and local design awards, including AIA National, Residential Architect, TSA and AIA West Texas. His award winning projects include Cinco Camp, Sombreada Hasta, the Burns Residence and Ranch Shelter.

A long-time champion and advocate for design excellence, Wellen is the co-creator of the highly successful Texas Architects Design Conference.  Wellen has also served on numerous design juries, lectured and contributed to professional committees, including the Texas Architects Design Awards.  He is a founding member of the Texas Tech School of Architecture Visiting Critic’s Studio and the former chair and long-time member of the TSA’s Publications Committee, where he has influenced Texas Architect to bring the best design in the region to a national audience. Among his many honors are the Texas Tech College of Architecture Tau Sigma Delta Silver Medal and its Distinguished Alumnus award.

Wellen will be joined by Max Levy, FAIA and Mark Gunderson, AIA in conversation about Frank Welch at the conclusion of his presentation.

Rhotenberry Wellen Architects (RWA) was founded in 1988 when James R. Rhotenberry, Jr., AIA, and Mark T. Wellen, AIA, merged their practices. The principals have a combined total of over 50 years of experience designing and managing a broad range of institutional, commercial and residential projects ranging in cost from less than $100,000 to over $20,000,000. Projects have been built in Texas, New Mexico, California, Colorado, and Maine.

RWA maintains a strong commitment to a highly personalized form of practice which allows the principals to remain directly involved with projects from inception to completion. Consequently, the firm has remained small, allowing its principals to provide a hands-on style of project management which consistently results in quality projects and satisfied clients. RWA’s commitment to a philosophy of high quality design has garnered them numerous design awards and extensive coverage in local, state and national publications.

The Forum is honored to have Mark Wellen distinguished architect and academic thought leader, present this year's Frank Welch Memorial Lecture.

About the Frank Welch Memorial Lecture

The Dallas Architecture Forum has established the Frank Welch Memorial Lecture to honor the legacy of Frank Welch, both as the Dean of Texas Modernist architects, and as the wonderful friend that Frank was to The Forum. Frank Welch was a long-time friend and member of The Dallas Architecture Forum, and we were fortunate to have events at many of the residences that he designed. The highlight of each event was when Frank would give brief remarks about the project to the attendees. He was always gracious, insightful, and humble, and his presence made the event memorable for all who were there.

Frank Welch’s legacy will continue through his work, including his revered project, The Birthday, which inspired the design aesthetic of a new generation of Texas design professionals. The architects that Frank Welch mentored and the lives he touched are lasting tributes to his vision and humanity.

Frank Welch’s family has designated The Dallas Architecture Forum as one of the non-profit organizations to which memorial donations in his honor can be made. Your tax-deductible donations will be used to continue to fund the annual Frank Welch Memorial Lecture. For more information and to donate to the Frank Welch Memorial Lecture fund, click Here

Snøhetta (Norwegian pronunciation: ['snø??h?t?]) began as a collaborative architectural and landscape workshop, and has remained true to its trans-disciplinary way of thinking since its inception. Today, Snøhetta has grown to become an internationally renowned practice of architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, product, graphic, digital design and art, with 280 employees of more than thirty different nationalities, and an equal gender distribution. The practice has a global presence, with offices spanning from Oslo, Paris, and Innsbruck, to New York, Hong Kong, Adelaide and San Francisco. For more than 30 years, Snøhetta has designed some of the world’s most notable public and cultural projects. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original transdisciplinary approach, and integrates architectural, landscape, interior, product, graphic, digital design and art across its projects. The collaborative nature between Snøhetta's different disciplines is an essential driving force of the practice. A definite relationship between multiple disciplines is a driving force in all of Snøhetta’s work. This is demonstrated through the company’s long history, where landscape and architecture work together without division, from the earliest stage possible.

The firm places experience at the center of the design process, for a design that engages the senses and physicality of the body while fostering social interaction. This allows Snøhetta’s designs to promote both individual and collective empowerment in the communities where they work. At the heart of all of the firm’s work is a commitment to shaping the built environment both in the service of humanism and the longevity of our planet. Their interdisciplinary design process ensures that Snøhetta projects are both poetic and pragmatic, where high design works in conjunction with sustainable building performance. Snøhetta is currently involved in numerous projects in Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Working globally gives each designer valuable cultural and economic insight and creates the foundation of Snøhetta’s continuously evolving professional knowledge base.

Julie Eizenberg is a founding principal of Koning Eizenberg. Julie brings design vision, leadership, and expertise in working with cities, nonprofit agencies, institutions and private developers to generate inventive master plans and public places. She is an astute observer leading investigations that reshape the way we think about conventional building typologies. Her focus on the user experience — whether it is an individual, underserved community, or the public at large — brings an empathetic perspective that translates seemingly mundane programs into places of ease and generosity.

The studio’s design practice is rooted in an inherent pragmatism driven by tight budgets and commitment to environmentally responsive design. This approach converts constraints into innovative design strategies that are institutionally transformative. Notable projects include the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Hancock Lofts, and 28th Street Apartments as well as more recent projects like the Pico Branch Library, Geffen Academy and Museum Lab. The firm’s work has been published extensively, including I.D., Architectural Record, Residential Architect, Vanity Fair and Metropolis.

Under Julie’s leadership, Koning Eizenberg has earned more than 180 design and sustainability awards and has been widely published. The practice has been honored as AIA California’s firm of the year, and she and founding partner Hank Koning were awarded the 2019 Australia Institute of Architects Gold Medal and the 2012 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal in recognition of a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.

Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and honorary doctorate from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and a master’s degree in architecture from UCLA. She teaches and lectures around the world, currently serves on the boards of Public Architecture, the School of Architecture at Taliesin, and FYI (From Youth Inside) FILMS. Her most recent book, titled “Urban Hallucinations,” offers more insight into the philosophy and work of a practice that aligns humanist values with inventive architectural form making.

Steven Lewis was a founding partner of the firm RAW International in Los Angeles where he helped build a successful design practice over a 20-year period and collaborated with ZGF on memorable projects, including the Exposition Park Master Plan and the California Science Center that made a real difference in the fabric of their communities. In 2004, Steven accepted an invitation to join the U.S. General Services Administration’s Office of the Chief Architect in Washington, DC, where he served a four-year term as program manager. It was here where he worked to “create a legacy of civic architecture for our time”. Key projects included the $300M renovation of the Federal Complex in downtown Chicago designed by Mies van der Rohe, security pavilions at the 26 Federal Plaza Federal Building in New York City, and the Thurgood Marshall Federal Courthouse renovation in Washington D.C.

In addition to his excellence across the built environment, Steven demonstrates a commitment to equity in the profession that infuses every part of his professional life. He was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design for the 2006-07 academic year, where he focused on the issue of race within the profession of architecture. In December of 2010, Steven concluded a two-year term as President of the National Organization of Minority Architects, traveling around the U.S. and several other countries advocating for architects of color. He used his platform as president to prioritize cultivating the next generation of diverse architects and designers. Steven was the 2016 recipient of the AIA’s esteemed Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award as mentioned above, and was elevated to the AIA’s College of Fellows. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Syracuse University School of Architecture.

Lewis also served in the Detroit Planning Department with Maurice Cox, advancing the ambitious mission of helping to revitalize the city’s urban neighborhoods. While at Detroit’s Planning Department he served as the Design Director for the Central Region of the city as well as holding a Professorship in Practice at the University of Michigan, leading design studios focused on community issues and urban planning. Steven is now a Principal for the Los Angeles office of ZGF, where he leads the urban design practice with projects that include a major office complex in Sacramento for the State of California.

Dirk Denison, FAIA, is an architect, educator, and dedicated supporter of the arts. As the founding principal of Dirk Denison Architects he has built a Chicago-based firm that is recognized internationally for award-winning design that reflects the uniqueness of each client’s needs to live, work, learn and create. This national practice is committed to design excellence across a range of building types and scales, with a focus on residential, retail, hospitality, institutional, commercial, and campus planning projects. The firm offers a full range of services, including programming, site analysis, design, preparation and administration of construction documents, and post-construction services, as well as interior furnishing and furniture design.

The work of Dirk Denison Architects throughout the U.S. has been recognized by international design publications, including Architect, Architectural Digest, A+U, Elle Décor, Global Architecture, Interior Design, Interior Design Homes, Metropolitan Home, The New York Times Magazine, Progressive Architecture, and the Urban Land Institute Magazine, and has won awards from the American Institute of Architects, AIA Chicago, the Chicago Architectural Club, and IIDA Illinois, along with the Gold Key Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design.

Denison trained at the University of Michigan, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. His first monograph, Dirk Denison 10 Houses, was published by Actar in December 2018.

Virtual Lecture Presentation via Zoom

Dirk Denison Architects crafts a narrative for each of its projects—one that weaves together the idiosyncrasies of the site, program and client. Their process centers around care and consideration, space and design, quality and craft, materiality and landscape. Their designs for homes, offices, galleries, student housing, and other spaces for living and working respond to the distinctive character of each client and environment on a human level.

Dirk Denison has been a leading member of the faculty in the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology for over thirty years, during which he has fostered a recommitment to the university’s urban setting and architecturally significant campus through his research, teaching, and service. His teaching has emphasized community-based design, housing, campus planning, and transit-oriented development. Under his supervision, the IIT Campus Architects collective developed a master plan for the campus, completed an assessment of historic buildings, conducted a study for the Urban Land Institute, promoted a landscape improvement initiative, and created a framework for the trajectory of future development. Of note, these efforts and initiatives led to the design competition for the McCormick Tribune Student Center, ultimately designed by Rem Koolhaas, as well as additions and improvements to on-campus student housing.

Under Denison’s direction, and with sponsorship by IIT, the biennial Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) recognizes the best built work in the Americas. Through a highly developed network of individuals representing various fields and areas of expertise throughout the Americas, MCHAP reveals issues facing our urban environments and contemporary architectural practices and shapes new understandings of how design might impact our changing world. The prize serves as a platform for exchange and fosters a larger international dialogue among leading designers, scholars, and urban thinkers. At the Art Institute of Chicago, Dirk has served as president of the Architecture & Design Society and is the current board chair of the Society for Contemporary Art as well as member of the Committee on Modern and Contemporary Art. Denison is also a member of the National Advisory Council for the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the board of the Mies van der Rohe Society at IIT, the board of directors of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and the City of Chicago Park District Public Art Committee, which oversees the Chicago Lakefront Sculpture Initiative. Denison received his Master of Architecture from Harvard’s GSD, where he studied under Daniel Libeskind, Peter Eisenman, and Henry Cobb. The studio’s work has been recognized by international design publications, including Architect, Architectural Digest, A+U, Elle Décor, Global Architecture, Interior Design, Interior Design Homes, Metropolitan Home, The New York Times Magazine, Progressive Architecture, and the Urban Land Institute Magazine, and has won awards from the American Institute of Architects, AIA Chicago, the Chicago Architectural Club, and IIDA Illinois.

Jason Long is a Partner at OMA, an international practice with projects around the world. He is based in the New York office. Since joining the firm in 2003, Mr. Long has brought a research-driven, interdisciplinary approach to a wide range of OMA’s projects internationally. From concept to completion, he served as the project manager for a new national museum in Quebec City and the Faena Forum, a multi-purpose venue in Miami. Among OMA’s many award-winning projects are the Seattle Public Library, the Casa de Música in Portugal, the CCTV headquarters in Beijing, and the Taipei Performing Arts Center.

“OMA is one of the leading architectural design firms in the world whose depth and breadth of experience is remarkable in terms of project type and the number of countries in which they operate,” stated Forum Executive Director Nate Eudaly. “As one of the firm’s partners, Jason Long has extensive experience in leading the work of this international powerhouse. The Dallas community will have an opportunity to hear the details of past and current OMA projects in Texas and beyond in what we believe will be a fascinating evening.”

In Texas, Mr. Long is the OMA Design Partner for POST Houston, which will transform the former main USPS facility into a new mixed use commercial and cultural anchor. OMA’s presence in Dallas includes the Wyly Theater at AT&T Performing Arts Center, a winning proposal for The Connected City (a proposal to connect downtown Dallas to the Trinity River) and the design of the recent Dior exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art.

The lecture will occur at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.   The lecture will be presented virtually via Zoom. Currently, Mr. Long is leading three projects focusing on urbanism and the public realm in Washington D.C. that provide an innovative approach to recreation, public health and equitable development at varying scales: the 11th Street Bridge Park, a new elevated green space crossing the Anacostia River; a sport and recreation masterplan for the RFK Stadium Armory Campus; and a streetscape design for Washington D.C.’s convention center. In addition, he is designing a multi-level restaurant within the new First and Broadway Park in downtown Los Angeles.

Long’s portfolio extends to residential development in California and New York, including The Avery in San Francisco and most recently two new towers for Greenpoint Landing, OMA’s first project in Brooklyn. He has recently focused on a number of adaptive reuse projects including the transformation of a post office warehouse in downtown Houston into a mixed-use hub, a historic parking garage in New York City into a new synagogue, and a laboratory building at the University of Toronto into a center for the university administration.

Jason Long holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Vassar College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He also currently teaches at the Cornell University School of Architecture, Art and Planning.

OMA is an international practice operating within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism. AMO, a research and design studio, applies architectural thinking to domains beyond.

OMA is led by eight partners – Rem Koolhaas, Ellen van Loon, Reinier de Graaf, Shohei Shigematsu, Iyad Alsaka, Chris van Duijn, Jason Long, and Managing Partner-Architect David Gianotten – and maintains offices in Rotterdam, New York, Hong Kong, Beijing, Doha, Dubai and Brisbane.

OMA-designed buildings currently under construction include Taipei Performing Arts Centre, the Axel Springer Campus and the renovation of Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) in Berlin, the RAI NHow Hotel in Amsterdam, the New Museum for Western Australia in Perth, a new building for Brighton College, The Factory Manchester and Prince Plaza in Shenzhen.

OMA's completed projects include Norra Tornen in Stockholm (2018), Fondazione Prada (2018), BLOX / DAC in Copenhagen (2018), Fondation d'Entreprise Galeries Lafayette in Paris (2018), Qatar National Library (2018), Rijnstraat 8 (2017), Lab City CentraleSupélec in Saclay (2017), Bibliothèque Alexis de Tocqueville (2016), Il Fondaco dei Tedeschi (2016), the Faena District in Miami (2016), Pierre Lassonde Pavilion, a new building for the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2016), Timmerhuis, the new home for Rotterdam’s municipal offices (2015), Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow (2015), G-Star Headquarters in Amsterdam (2014), Shenzhen Stock Exchange (2013), De Rotterdam, a large mixed-use tower in the Netherlands (2013), CCTV Headquarters in Beijing (2012), New Court, the headquarters for Rothschild Bank in London (2011), Milstein Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York (2011), and Maggie's Centre, a cancer care centre in Glasgow (2011). Earlier buildings include Casa da Música in Porto (2005), Seattle Central Library (2004), and Netherlands Embassy in Berlin (2003).

AMO often works in parallel with OMA's clients to fertilize architecture with intelligence from this array of disciplines. This is the case with Prada: AMO's research into identity, in-store technology, and new possibilities of content-production in fashion helped generate OMA's architectural designs for new Prada epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles. In 2004, AMO was commissioned by the European Union to study its visual communication, and designed a coloured "barcode" flag – combining the flags of all member states – that was used during the Austrian presidency of the EU.

AMO has worked with Universal Studios, Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Heineken, Ikea, Condé Nast, Harvard University and the Hermitage. It has produced exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale, including The Gulf (2006), Cronocaos (2010) and Public Works (2012) and for Fondazione Prada including When Attitudes Become Form (2012) and Serial and Portable Classics (2015). AMO, with Harvard University, was responsible for the research and curation of the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale and its principle publication Elements. Other notable projects are a plan for a Europe-wide renewable energy grid; Project Japan, a 720-page book on the Metabolism architecture movement (Taschen, 2010); and the educational program of Strelka Institute in Moscow.

The John Rogers & Georgette de Bruchard Photography Collection - October 6 2020

The John Rogers & Georgette de Bruchard Photography Collection is one of the most significant archives of regional architectural and documentary photography in Dallas. The collection spans 1920-1992, with the bulk covering the period 1945-1991. Images in the archive were captured by husband and wife John and Georgette, and consist primarily of people, architecture (office buildings, interiors, exteriors, houses), advertising and events. Many of the images in the collection appeared in publications such as Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Living.

Rogers developed close relationships with architects and firms working in Dallas including Jarvis-Putty-Jarvis, O’Neil Ford, Arch Swank, Beran & Shelmire and Philip Johnson, among many others. The archive includes major building projects such as Republic Center, Statler Hilton, and the Texas Instruments Semiconductor Facility as well as smaller projects, such as drug stores and public libraries. UNT Libraries Special Collections has spent nearly two years meticulously organizing and indexing the collection, which is being carefully and systematically digitized. Following the full digitization process and the identification of subject matter, the images will be freely available for personal and educational use through the UNT Portal to Texas History.
