Mark Wellen FAIA is co-founder and principal of Rhotenberry Wellen Architects in Midland, Texas. Wellen began his career in Frank Welch’s studio, and is an especially appropriate choice to present this season’s Frank Welch Memorial Lecture. Drawing inspiration from the vast, inimitable landscape and the traditions of Texas’ modernist regionalist architects of previous generations, he has become a champion of the highest standards of the built environment, through both design and leadership. His work is both intuitive and instinctive, drawing on the unrelenting characteristics of the region – its big sky, long horizon, intense light and climatic extremes to reveal moments of richness that elevate the human experience. Wellen’s body of work includes varied building types and project sizes from ranch shelters to residences, museums and downtown office towers. His work has received numerous national, regional and local design awards, including AIA National, Residential Architect, TSA and AIA West Texas. His award winning projects include Cinco Camp, Sombreada Hasta, the Burns Residence and Ranch Shelter.  

A long-time champion and advocate for design excellence, Wellen is the co-creator of the highly successful Texas Architects Design Conference.  Wellen has also served on numerous design juries, lectured and contributed to professional committees, including the Texas Architects Design Awards.  He is a founding member of the Texas Tech School of Architecture Visiting Critic’s Studio and the former chair and long-time member of the TSA’s Publications Committee, where he has influenced Texas Architect to bring the best design in the region to a national audience. Among his many honors are the Texas Tech College of Architecture Tau Sigma Delta Silver Medal and its Distinguished Alumnus award. 

Wellen will be joined by Max Levy, FAIA and Mark Gunderson, AIA in conversation about Frank Welch at the conclusion of his presentation.

Rhotenberry Wellen Architects (RWA) was founded in 1988 when James R. Rhotenberry, Jr., AIA, and Mark T. Wellen, AIA, merged their practices. The principals have a combined total of over 50 years of experience designing and managing a broad range of institutional, commercial and residential projects ranging in cost from less than $100,000 to over $20,000,000. Projects have been built in Texas, New Mexico, California, Colorado, and Maine.

RWA maintains a strong commitment to a highly personalized form of practice which allows the principals to remain directly involved with projects from inception to completion. Consequently, the firm has remained small, allowing its principals to provide a hands-on style of project management which consistently results in quality projects and satisfied clients. RWA’s commitment to a philosophy of high quality design has garnered them numerous design awards and extensive coverage in local, state and national publications.

About the Frank Welch Memorial Lecture

The Dallas Architecture Forum has established the Frank Welch Memorial Lecture to honor the legacy of Frank Welch, both as the Dean of Texas Modernist architects, and as the wonderful friend that Frank was to The Forum. Frank Welch was a long-time friend and member of The Dallas Architecture Forum, and we were fortunate to have events at many of the residences that he designed. The highlight of each event was when Frank would give brief remarks about the project to the attendees. He was always gracious, insightful, and humble, and his presence made the event memorable for all who were there.

Frank Welch’s legacy will continue through his work, including his revered project, The Birthday, which inspired the design aesthetic of a new generation of Texas design professionals. The architects that Frank Welch mentored and the lives he touched are lasting tributes to his vision and humanity. 

Frank Welch’s family has designated The Dallas Architecture Forum as one of the non-profit organizations to which memorial donations in his honor can be made. PANEL DISCUSSIONS

The Forum organizes and presents an annual series of interactive, educational, and informal panel discussions about topics and issues of local and regional interest.  The panels are moderated by community leaders and design professionals, and feature panelists recognized as experts in their fields.  In addition, The Forum highlights regional design talent focusing on both their design inspirations and award-winning projects.  Panels are presented as a service to the community at no charge. 

DESIGN SYMPOSIUM

The Dallas Design Symposium brings thought leaders from architecture, art and design together to explore the intersection of these fields for thoughtful and critical conversation.  Past participants have included:  environmental artist Christo, New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, Aaron Betsky, Leo Marmol, Tom Kundig, Brad Oldham, Johnston Marklee, Terrence Riley, Karim Rashid, artists Walead Beshty and Jorge Pardo, and the Directors of the Chinati Foundation and MASS MoCA.

THE DESIGN SOCIETY

The Design Society is a satellite established to enhance and expand The Forum’s relationships with a broader audience and new constituencies. This group is led by visionary and emerging leaders in the design professions and offers additional programs, outreach and engagement primarily designed for a younger audience. Activities include: casual gatherings after Forum events, Pecha Kuchas, design-related community projects, informal design tours and Happy Hours.  Design Society events are detailed on their Facebook page.

365 MODERN LIVING | DESIGN EXPERIENCES

“365 Modern Living” is a series of receptions hosted by The Forum focused around living with great design every day of the year. “365 Modern Living” features some of Dallas’ most architecturally significant modern and contemporary residences and explore the ideas surrounding design, inspiration, and innovation.  Attendees have the opportunity to converse with the homes’ design teams of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects as well as owners. Experiencing architecture and design first-hand is vital to fulfilling the Forum’s mission. The Forum hosts its Annual Members’ Meeting and other special events at significant buildings in Dallas. Study Tours have been conducted to Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and Mexico City. Forum Study Groups have visited mid-century modern residences in Palm Springs in association with the University of Texas at Austin, and toured art and architecture in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Nasher Sculpture Center.

PUBLICATIONS

Dallas Modern is a monograph published by The Forum featuring twenty of the most architecturally outstanding modern and contemporary residences in Dallas.  With over 200 pages and 250 color photographs as well as insightful essays written by Maxwell Anderson, Mark Gundersen and Jeremy Strick, the book advances The Forum’s mission to explore how design matters in daily life. The Forum also produced a limited-edition folio featuring important Dallas-Fort Worth cultural buildings designed by some of the most influential architects from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The Forum commissioned esteemed photographer Laura Wilson to take original images for this folio celebrating these civic treasures in North Texas. The Forum plans to produce future publications about the significant architecture of the North Texas region.

OUR COMMUNITY | COLLABORATIONS | ACCOLADES

Since its founding, The Forum has fostered vibrant partnerships with over fifty regional, national and international educational, civic and cultural organizations. These collaborations produce meaningful discussions that connect the community to the importance of design in modern life.  Among our collaborators is the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington.  Recent collaborations between CAPPA and The Forum explored issues and topics related to architecture and urban planning, including Texas Regional Architecture and Affordable Housing in cooperation with bcWorkshop (Building Community Workshop).

The Forum also works closely with Preservation Dallas, the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects and its affiliated Architecture and Design Exchange. Other cultural, education and civic partners include:  Dallas City Design Studio, DoCoMoMo North Texas, Meadows School and Museum at SMU, The MAC, Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Contemporary, and the Kimbell Art Museum. The Forum also collaborates with other national organizations focused on stimulating discourse on architecture, design and urbanism.  Among the groups with whom The Forum has cooperated are:  Aga Kahn Foundation, Auburn University’s Rural Studio, Architectural League of New York City, Harvard Graduate School of Design, National Building Museum, Rice Design Alliance, Texas Tech University andthe University of Texas at Austin.

The Forum’s successful collaborative initiatives and leadership have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including an AIA Dallas Community Honor Award, a Citation of Honor from the Texas Society of Architects, and a Collaborative Achievement Award from the national offices of the American Institute of Architects. The Forum is a founding member of the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO), an international organization dedicated to enhancing public dialogue about architecture and design. The Forum’s Executive Director serves on the Board of Directors of the AAO.

Alan Ricks

The Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, landscape architecture, design and the urban environment, is pleased to present leading architect Alan Ricks IN PERSON on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at the Kalita Humphreys Theater.

Alan Ricks is Founding Principal and Chief Design Officer of MASS Design Group, with projects in over twenty countries covering architecture, landscape, engineering, construction, and fabrication. MASS Design was awarded the National Design Award for Architecture from the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, and the Royal Institute of British Architects named Alan an International Fellow. Ricks is also a member of The Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum. A highly sought-after lecturer, Alan has taught at Yale and the Harvard GSD. Chris Anderson, chief curator of TED, described his TED talk as “a different language about what architecture can aspire to be.”

Mass Design Group was named WSJ Magazine’s Architecture Innovator of the Year for 2020 for their healthcare architecture that reimagines spaces for everyday life. The studio’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice has become an iconic touchstone in the movement for racial justice in our country. Alan currently oversees many projects including a new agricultural university campus in Rwanda that upon completion will be one of the most climate positive projects ever built. The master plan contains 55 buildings on the campus and includes site reforestation and a conservation plan that will build back biodiversity on the site.

“MASS Design Group is of the moment. The mission of MASS Design Group is to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity. MASS is a team of over 140+architects, landscape architects, engineers, builders, furniture designers, writers, filmmakers, and researchers representing 20 countries around the globe. They believe in expanding access to design that is purposeful, healing, and hopeful. In 2020, MASS was named the Architecture Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal, for its origins in healthcare and designing architecture as a medium for healing. In 2019, Architect Magazine ranked MASS 4^th in Design, and in 2017, MASS was awarded the National Design Award in Architecture, given each year by the Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Museum for Design. To date, their work has been featured in over 4,000 publications.

MASS believes that every project has a mission, and they accompany their partners throughout the design process – from early visioning through project completion – to develop and implement a shared vision for how design can achieve that mission. They do this through architecture, landscape design, engineering, planning, research, film, and community engagement. Helping build a climate positive future is imperative. MASS projects move beyond just issues of energy use and efficiency, to holistically design the project ecosystem, including an entire supply chain that is sustainable, resilient, and regenerative. One Health design is a strategy that produces diverse, healthy, and productive habitats for human, animal, and ecological growth.

MASS Design Group, which stands for Model of Architecture Serving Society, is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, governed by a board of directors who oversee and advise on the organization and the maintenance of their mission. The board is comprised of a diverse group of through leaders from different sectors and perspectives that meet quarterly to review the organization’s strategy and operations. The full-time senior leadership of MASS Design Group is comprised of design principals and senior directors who develop and administer the strategy of MASS’s work. The group meets weekly to assess where to direct grants in the form of in-king services, select what projects to take on, and review general operations and strategy.

These collaborations produce meaningful discussions that connect the community to the importance of design in modern life.  Among our collaborators is the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington.  Recent collaborations between CAPPA and The Forum explored issues and topics related to architecture and urban planning, including Texas Regional Architecture and Affordable Housing in cooperation with bcWorkshop (Building Community Workshop).

The Forum also works closely with Preservation Dallas, the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects and its affiliated Architecture and Design Exchange. Other cultural, education and civic partners include:  Dallas City Design Studio, DoCoMoMo North Texas, Meadows School and Museum at SMU, The MAC, Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Contemporary, and the Kimbell Art Museum. The Forum also collaborates with other national organizations focused on stimulating discourse on architecture, design and urbanism.  Among the groups with whom The Forum has cooperated are:  Aga Kahn Foundation, Auburn University’s Rural Studio, Architectural League of New York City, Harvard Graduate School of Design, National Building Museum, Rice Design Alliance, Texas Tech University andthe University of Texas at Austin.

The Forum’s successful collaborative initiatives and leadership have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including an AIA Dallas Community Honor Award, a Citation of Honor from the Texas Society of Architects, and a Collaborative Achievement Award from the national offices of the American Institute of Architects. The Forum is a founding member of the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO), an international organization dedicated to enhancing public dialogue about architecture and design. The Forum’s Executive Director serves on the Board of Directors of the AAO.

The Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, landscape architecture, design and the urban environment, is pleased to present esteemed architect Julie Eizenberg at 7:00 pm, on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in a virtual lecture via Zoom.   

Julie Eizenberg, FAIA, is a Founding Principal of Koning Eizenberg, where she is responsible for setting the studio’s design vision. The practice has been honored as AIA California’s Firm of the Year, and Eizenberg, together with founding partner Hank Koning, was awarded the AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal and the Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal. She was also recognized with an Honorary Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Melbourne. Under her leadership, Koning Eizenberg has earned over 180 design, preservation, and sustainability awards.

Koning Eizenberg is known for sustainable and affordable housing whose design begins with considering the residents, rather than the budget, to provide safety, comfort and dignity. Julie Eizenberg is a founding principal of Koning Eizenberg. Julie brings design vision, leadership, and expertise in working with cities, nonprofit agencies, institutions and private developers to generate inventive master plans and public places. She is an astute observer leading investigations that reshape the way we think about conventional building typologies. Her focus on the user experience — whether it is an individual, underserved community, or the public at large — brings an empathetic perspective that translates seemingly mundane programs into places of ease and generosity.

The studio’s design practice is rooted in an inherent pragmatism driven by tight budgets and commitment to environmentally responsive design. This approach converts constraints into innovative design strategies that are institutionally transformative. Notable projects include the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Hancock Lofts, and 28th Street Apartments as well as more recent projects like the Pico Branch Library, Geffen Academy and Museum Lab. The firm’s work has been published extensively, including I.D., Architectural Record, Residential Architect, Vanity Fair and Metropolis.

Under Julie’s leadership, Koning Eizenberg has earned more than 180 design and sustainability awards and has been widely published. The practice has been honored as AIA California’s firm of the year, and she and founding partner Hank Koning were awarded the 2019 Australia Institute of Architects Gold Medal and the 2012 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal in recognition of a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.

Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and honorary doctorate from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and a master’s degree in architecture from UCLA. She teaches and lectures around the world, currently serves on the boards of Public Architecture, the School of Architecture at Taliesin, and FYI (From Youth Inside) FILMS. Her most recent book, titled “Urban Hallucinations,” offers more insight into the philosophy and work of a practice that aligns humanist values with inventive architectural form making.

DESIGN SYMPOSIUM

The Dallas Design Symposium brings thought leaders from architecture, art and design together to explore the intersection of these fields for thoughtful and critical conversation.  Past participants have included:  environmental artist Christo, New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, Aaron Betsky, Leo Marmol, Tom Kundig, Brad Oldham, Johnston Marklee, Terrence Riley, Karim Rashid, artists Walead Beshty and Jorge Pardo, and the Directors of the Chinati Foundation and MASS MoCA.

THE DESIGN SOCIETY

The Design Society is a satellite established to enhance and expand The Forum’s relationships with a broader audience and new constituencies. This group is led by visionary and emerging leaders in the design professions and offers additional programs, outreach and engagement primarily designed for a younger audience. Activities include: casual gatherings after Forum events, Pecha Kuchas, design-related community projects, informal design tours and Happy Hours.  Design Society events are detailed on their Facebook page.

365 MODERN LIVING | DESIGN EXPERIENCES

“365 Modern Living” is a series of receptions hosted by The Forum focused around living with great design every day of the year. “365 Modern Living” features some of Dallas’ most architecturally significant modern and contemporary residences and explore the ideas surrounding design, inspiration, and innovation.  Attendees have the opportunity to converse with the homes’ design teams of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects as well as owners. Experiencing architecture and design first-hand is vital to fulfilling the Forum’s mission. The Forum hosts its Annual Members’ Meeting and other special events at significant buildings in Dallas. Study Tours have been conducted to Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and Mexico City. Forum Study Groups have visited mid-century modern residences in Palm Springs in association with the University of Texas at Austin, and toured art and architecture in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Nasher Sculpture Center.

PUBLICATIONS

Dallas Modern is a monograph published by The Forum featuring twenty of the most architecturally outstanding modern and contemporary residences in Dallas.  With over 200 pages and 250 color photographs as well as insightful essays written by Maxwell Anderson, Mark Gundersen and Jeremy Strick, the book advances The Forum’s mission to explore how design matters in daily life. The Forum also produced a limited-edition folio featuring important Dallas-Fort Worth cultural buildings designed by some of the most influential architects from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The Forum commissioned esteemed photographer Laura Wilson to take original images for this folio celebrating these civic treasures in North Texas. The Forum plans to produce future publications about the significant architecture of the North Texas region.

ROBYN MENTER

Born and raised in South Africa, Robyn Menter studied design at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her internship and education includes the history and restoration of Cape Dutch furniture. A contemporary art collector, Robyn worked in South Africa as an interior designer specializing in historic preservation and South African antiques. In 1981 Robyn immigrated to Dallas. After working with the firms of Deborah Lloyd Forrest and Paul Draper and Associates, Robyn established Robyn Menter Design Associates, Inc. in 1994.

Robyn Menter Design Associates is a hands-on, design focused firm working across a wide range of typologies, exploring new ideas with a variety of engaged clients and craftspeople. Their projects primarily include high-end residential and workplace design. Robyn has collaborated with many talented architects including Graham Greene, Max Levy, Bernbaum Magadini, Cliff Welch, and Lake/Flato.

Bruce Bernbaum is a Co-Founder and Principal of Bernbaum / Magadini Architects, one of the leading residential architecture firms in Dallas. Bruce earned a bachelor of architecture from the University of Arizona. His architectural projects range from commercial, retail, industrial, and multi-family to client-based single family residential. Bruce serves on many charitable boards and has been involved with AIA educational committees and mentoring programs. He and his firm are active supporters of The Forum, and their award-winning work has been featured in numerous Forum special events.

MARY ELLEN COWAN

Head, Residential Design Studio, MESA  

Mary Ellen Cowan leads MESA’s Residential Design Studio. With over thirty years of experience in landscape architecture and construction management, Mary Ellen has an extensive understanding of garden design, both historic and contemporary, and expresses that knowledge in innovative design concepts and implements each project with intimate attention to construction detailing. She oversees field construction to ensure proper execution of the design concept. With MESA since 1996, Mary Ellen has developed a collective design approach embracing the landscape with respect to topography, natural systems, and the interpretation of site and its relationship to architecture. This approach respects the intentions of the architect while capturing the values of her clients. Her studio’s project work consistently generates outstanding design solutions receiving both state and national design awards. 

PAUL DRAPER

Founder, Paul Draper and Associates

For over four decades, Paul Draper has been beautifully integrating interior design and architecture in homes, hotels and restaurants worldwide, first in California and Asia and for over thirty years based in Dallas. Now largely concentrating on residential design, he is sought after for his expertise in bespoke furniture, curating art, space planning, and fixture and finish design. A longtime collaborator with architectural icons like Frank Welch, Max Levy and Overland Partners, Draper doesn’t impose a particular style on his clients. “Instead, I try to create a home in harmony with the architecture that is uniquely suited to the client, their needs and personality,” he says. “Design should be vital today, while avoiding trendiness. I like to work with rich natural palettes and rely on the innate beauty of these materials. I am dedicated to creating timeless, finely crafted interior solutions, focusing on design of the highest quality.”

Presents Celebrated Architect

Jason Long

Virtually via Zoom

The Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, landscape architecture, design and the urban environment, is pleased to present the celebrated architect Jason Long, on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 in a virtual lecture via Zoom.   

Jason Long is a Partner at OMA, an international practice with projects around the world. He is based in the New York office. Since joining the firm in 2003, Mr. Long has brought a research-driven, interdisciplinary approach to a wide range of OMA’s projects internationally. From concept to completion, he served as the project manager for a new national museum in Quebec City and the Faena Forum, a multi-purpose venue in Miami. Among OMA’s many award-winning projects are the Seattle Public Library, the Casa de Música in Portugal, the CCTV headquarters in Beijing, and the Taipei Performing Arts Center. 

“OMA is one of the leading architectural design firms in the world whose depth and breadth of experience is remarkable in terms of project type and the number of countries in which they operate,” stated Forum Executive Director Nate Eudaly. “As one of the firm’s partners, Jason Long has extensive experience in leading the work of this international powerhouse. The Dallas community will have an opportunity to hear the details of past and current OMA projects in Texas and beyond in what we believe will be a fascinating evening.”

In Texas, Mr. Long is the OMA Design Partner for POST Houston, which will transform the former main USPS facility into a new mixed use commercial and cultural anchor. OMA’s presence in Dallas includes the Wyly Theater at AT&T Performing Arts Center, a winning proposal for The Connected City (a proposal to connect downtown Dallas to the Trinity River) and the design of the recent Dior exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art.

The lecture will occur at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.   The lecture will be presented virtually via Zoom. Currently, Mr. Long is leading three projects focusing on urbanism and the public realm in Washington D.C. that provide an innovative approach to recreation, public health and equitable development at varying scales: the 11th Street Bridge Park, a new elevated green space crossing the Anacostia River; a sport and recreation masterplan for the RFK Stadium Armory Campus; and a streetscape design for Washington D.C.’s convention center. In addition, he is designing a multi-level restaurant within the new First and Broadway Park in downtown Los Angeles.

Long’s portfolio extends to residential development in California and New York, including The Avery in San Francisco and most recently two new towers for Greenpoint Landing, OMA’s first project in Brooklyn. He has recently focused on a number of adaptive reuse projects including the transformation of a post office warehouse in downtown Houston into a mixed-use hub, a historic parking garage in New York City into a new synagogue, and a laboratory building at the University of Toronto into a center for the university administration.

Jason Long holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Vassar College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He also currently teaches at the Cornell University School of Architecture, Art and Planning.

AMO often works in parallel with OMA's clients to fertilize architecture with intelligence from this array of disciplines. This is the case with Prada: AMO's research into identity, in-store technology, and new possibilities of content-production in fashion helped generate OMA's architectural designs for new Prada epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles. In 2004, AMO was commissioned by the European Union to study its visual communication, and designed a coloured "barcode" flag – combining the flags of all member states – that was used during the Austrian presidency of the EU.

AMO has worked with Universal Studios, Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Heineken, Ikea, Condé Nast, Harvard University and the Hermitage. It has produced exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale, including The Gulf (2006), Cronocaos (2010) and Public Works (2012) and for Fondazione Prada including When Attitudes Become Form (2012) and Serial and Portable Classics (2015). AMO, with Harvard University, was responsible for the research and curation of the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale and its principle publication Elements. Other notable projects are a plan for a Europe-wide renewable energy grid; Project Japan, a 720-page book on the Metabolism architecture movement (Taschen, 2010); and the educational program of Strelka Institute in Moscow.

The Dallas Architecture Forum educates, enriches and connects our community by presenting programs and events, creating experiences, and engaging global and local thought-leaders from the design fields to enhance how we live.

THE FORUM LECTURES | PANELS

The Forum Lecture Series features emerging voices as well as established leaders from the allied fields of architecture and design.  Pritzker Prize, Pulitzer Prize, AIA and ASLA Gold Medal winners as well as internationally acclaimed designs, authors and critics are among the over 210 speakers from over 20 countries who have presented at The Forum over the last two decades. PANEL DISCUSSIONS

The Forum organizes and presents an annual series of interactive, educational, and informal panel discussions about topics and issues of local and regional interest.  The panels are moderated by community leaders and design professionals, and feature panelists recognized as experts in their fields.  In addition, The Forum highlights regional design talent focusing on both their design inspirations and award-winning projects.  Panels are presented as a service to the community at no charge. 

DESIGN SYMPOSIUM

The Dallas Design Symposium brings thought leaders from architecture, art and design together to explore the intersection of these fields for thoughtful and critical conversation.  Past participants have included:  environmental artist Christo, New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, Aaron Betsky, Leo Marmol, Tom Kundig, Brad Oldham, Johnston Marklee, Terrence Riley, Karim Rashid, artists Walead Beshty and Jorge Pardo, and the Directors of the Chinati Foundation and MASS MoCA.

THE DESIGN SOCIETY

The Design Society is a satellite established to enhance and expand The Forum’s relationships with a broader audience and new constituencies. This group is led by visionary and emerging leaders in the design professions and offers additional programs, outreach and engagement primarily designed for a younger audience. Activities include: casual gatherings after Forum events, Pecha Kuchas, design-related community projects, informal design tours and Happy Hours.  Design Society events are detailed on their Facebook page.

365 MODERN LIVING | DESIGN EXPERIENCES

“365 Modern Living” is a series of receptions hosted by The Forum focused around living with great design every day of the year. “365 Modern Living” features some of Dallas’ most architecturally significant modern and contemporary residences and explore the ideas surrounding design, inspiration, and innovation.  Attendees have the opportunity to converse with the homes’ design teams of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects as well as owners. Experiencing architecture and design first-hand is vital to fulfilling the Forum’s mission. The Forum hosts its Annual Members’ Meeting and other special events at significant buildings in Dallas. Study Tours have been conducted to Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and Mexico City. Forum Study Groups have visited mid-century modern residences in Palm Springs in association with the University of Texas at Austin, and toured art and architecture in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Nasher Sculpture Center.

PUBLICATIONS

Dallas Modern is a monograph published by The Forum featuring twenty of the most architecturally outstanding modern and contemporary residences in Dallas.  With over 200 pages and 250 color photographs as well as insightful essays written by Maxwell Anderson, Mark Gundersen and Jeremy Strick, the book advances The Forum’s mission to explore how design matters in daily life. The Forum also produced a limited-edition folio featuring important Dallas-Fort Worth cultural buildings designed by some of the most influential architects from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The Forum commissioned esteemed photographer Laura Wilson to take original images for this folio celebrating these civic treasures in North Texas. The Forum plans to produce future publications about the significant architecture of the North Texas region.

OUR COMMUNITY | COLLABORATIONS | ACCOLADES

Since its founding, The Forum has fostered vibrant partnerships with over fifty regional, national and international educational, civic and cultural organizations. These collaborations produce meaningful discussions that connect the community to the importance of design in modern life.  Among our collaborators is the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington.  Recent collaborations between CAPPA and The Forum explored issues and topics related to architecture and urban planning, including Texas Regional Architecture and Affordable Housing in cooperation with bcWorkshop (Building Community Workshop).
