SUMMARY:The Forum Presents Panel on Single Family Housing
DESCRIPTION:The Dallas Architecture Forum\, a non-profit organization dedic
ated to providing public education about architecture\, design\, and the u
rban environment\, continues its popular Panel Discussion Series on Wednes
day\, May 25th\, 2022\, at 6:30 pm. Plan now to join us for this important
conversation about the challenges and opportunities for single-family hou
sing in Dallas. This Panel will look at issues impacting affordability\, a
ccessibility\, design and the role that the City of Dallas does and should
play to achieve greater equity in housing. This event is FREE to the publ
ic and will be presented on Zoom. You can register on Zoom to view this pr
esentation by using this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN
__cWw9iNDQHet99mc4HxzHQ . Once you register you will receive a sign-in lin
k from Zoom to join the webinar. \nDFW is seeing a massive increase in pop
ulation\, which by some counts is projected to grow to almost 12 million b
y the year 2050. While Dallas has seen rapid development of multi-family a
nd mixed-use projects in neighborhoods already zoned for them\, we are als
o seeing these types of developments being built in zones previously desig
nated as single-family lots. \nIn a city that has fiercely protected its s
ingle-family culture\, how will residential development address the balanc
 e between single-family and multi-family in equitable\, sustainable\, and
meaningful ways? What IS the future of the single-family typology\, and h
ow can we be a city that addresses the needs of the many while remaining e
conomically healthy? Join us as we discuss the policies\, design thinking\
, and initiatives surrounding the important questions of housing in the sh
ifting needs and demographics of Dallas. \n MODERATOR \n Kate Aoki\, AIA \
, is an architect and the Head of Exhibition Design at the Dallas Museum o
f Art. With a BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design
and a Master of Architecture degree from UTA CAPPA. Kate is fortunate to
practice in a profession that satisfies both her passion for fine art and
the design of space. She spent more than a decade at GFF\, Morrison Dilwo
rth + Walls\, and most recently at DSGN Associates\, where she worked on a
variety of projects that addressed important community needs. As Head of
Exhibition Design at the DMA\, Kate designs intimate and expressive space
s in ways that engage visitors while inviting them to learn more about the
art they experience and the communities in which they thrive. \nKate has
dedicated much of her time to participating on art and architectural comm
ittees\, as well as studio and design award juries. She was co-chair of AI
A-Dallas’ Communities by Design Committee as well as a member of the Texas
Society of Architects Community-Engaged Design Committee\, and she was re
cently awarded a Presidential Citation for her work on the DART D2 Advisor
y Committee. As adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Arlington
School of Architecture she taught second-year design fundamentals. Kate i
s the President-Elect of AIA-Dallas. She is also a member of the Board of
Directors for The Dallas Architecture Forum\, and Chair of The Forum’s De
 sign Society. \n PANELISTS \n Lawrence Agu\, III\; AICP | Assoc. AIA  is c
urrently a Chief Planner for the City of Dallas’ Planning and Urban Design
Department. His role includes managing a newly created team dubbed the “I
nnovation Lab” who specialize in data analytics\, policy research and comm
unity storytelling through data. He also serves as the project manager for
Dallas’ ForwardDallas Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Lawrence is an executi
ve board member for the CityLab High School Foundation\, which supports th
e mission of CityLab High School\, a Dallas ISD Choice school which introd
uces students to architecture\, urban planning\, and environmental sustain
ability through project-based curriculum. \nAs a first generation Nigerian
-American\, Lawrence holds dual master’s degrees in urban planning and arc
hitecture from the University of Texas at Arlington\, where he studied the
intersection between urban design\, transportation planning\, architectur
al design\, and economics. With expertise in both the public and private s
ectors\, Lawrence has demonstrated versatility in a range of skills from c
onstruction administration to community engagement. His interests focus on
international development\, social equity\, youth education\, and emergin
g planning technologies. \n Bang Dang  has called Dallas his home since he
was five years old\, and having an Asian background\, has a unique\, East
ern/Western take on architecture. Bang’s focus is making architecture that
is abstract in its homage to Texas regionalism and subtle in its inventiv
eness. Bang’s experience in the field is broad and varied\, covering archi
tecture of all types and scales. Bang holds a Bachelor of Architecture fro
m the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Architecture from the
University of Texas at Arlington\, where he is currently a Professor in P
ractice.  \nBang is a founding partner\, with Rizi Faruqui\, of the award
winning\, modern practice FAR + DANG. The work of the 10-year-old firm is
varied in typology and scale but all the projects have a rigorous focus o
n making modern spaces informed by a study of the existing context\, the r
ationale of structure\, and the appropriateness of materiality. The firm’s
current work involves a mix of making speculative dwellings within transi
tioning Dallas neighborhoods and a number of interesting commercial and in
stitutional projects of medium scale. A rigorous and proactive research ag
enda and a passion for exploring ideas of modern space and contemporary li
festyle are the foundations of the firm’s design process. \n Julia Lindgre
n  is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington where
she teaches design-build studios and seminars focused on social equity an
d community engagement. Through practice\, research and teaching\, Julia e
xplores the ways in which design processes can be used to restructure the
distribution of power within cities. Julia is a trained architect\, build
er and urban thinker with experience directing programs across public and
private sectors in New York City\, Philadelphia\, Dallas\, and Brownsvill
 e. She is guided by the belief that true equity can only be achieved when
residents and community stakeholders work together to shape their surroun
dings. Julia works daily in partnership with marginalized communities incl
uding low-income\, immigrant and black and brown communities to solve comp
lex urban problems through the thoughtful act of design and making. \nPrio
r to joining UTA\, Julia was a member of Hester Street's Leadership Team w
here she worked on projects ranging in scale from a modest transformation
of a men's shelter yard to re-designing the way NY State does code enforc
ement. Prior to working at Hester Street\, Julia was a Design at ISA and b
cWORKSHOP\, where she managed team-based design projects. Before that\, Ju
lia developed and implemented initiatives in Dallas and Brownsville\, Texa
s to improve equity through projects that included rapid recovery disaster
housing and resident-informed home design. \n Sponsors for this Panel Dis
cussion  include Panel Season Sponsors Abeyta Tibbs Architecture\, Galaxy
